Centre of Advanced Research & Excellence in Virtual autopsy

The Centre of Advanced Research & Excellence in Virtual autopsy has been established by the collaboration of two premiere institutes AIIMS & ICMR headquarters. An area of 2400 square feet is dedicated to a research facility. The centre and its PMCT set-up both are interconnected with the Odourless Modular Autopsy suite and post-mortem embalming wing. The scanning room of the PMCT set up had a 16-slice MSCT scanner, Canon Inc Aquilion Lightning TSX-035A CT and the console room of the PMCT setup has dedicated workstations (Vitrea 6.9. and Vitrea 7.10), viewing stations and an RAD storage system. All existing radiation safety regulations fin PMCT setup is in accordance with the current regulation of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India (AERB) and BARC.

About

Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta excelled as medical student securing a Gold Medal for standing first in the MBBS examination. He completed his Post-Graduation, MD Forensic Medicine from the prestigious Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and was awarded Diplomate of National Board in 1997. He has more than 26 years of medical teaching experience and standing in Medical Profession as a distinguished teacher and researcher recognized by Indian Association of Medicolegal Experts along with Windsor University, Canada and rewarded fellowship.

Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta’s life mission is Humanitarian Forensics & Dignified Management of Dead. In the past 27 years as practicing forensic surgeon, Dr Gupta has worked towards sensitization of the doctors working in the mortuaries to handle the deceased with utmost dignity. He is working towards the concept of Digital Autopsy to prevent unnecessary or no dissection of dead bodies during postmortem examination and reconstructive surgery in disfigured and mutilated body. He had established the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy in collaboration with ICMR for the execution of the same concept. He is the first autopsy professor of world who has been awarded Fellowship by the International College of Surgeons, Chicago for his contribution in the field of Autopsy surgery.

History and Inauguration  

Virtual autopsy project in India is the first of its kind in the SAARC nations. On24.09.20218 “Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy” was selected as one of the CARE’s by ICMR. With proper validation from Ministry of Health and Family welfare and the Honorable Union Health Minister, Government of India it was inaugurated on 20th March 2021 during the 2nd ANNUAL AIIMS FORENSIC Guild Conclave 2021 by Prof. Balram Bhargav, the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research.
