Opening Doors to the Future: Launching the Centre for Advanced Virtual Autopsy

On March 20th, 2021, a significant event took place at AIIMS, New Delhi, marking a milestone in the field of forensic science. The Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy was inaugurated, signaling a new era of innovation and advancement in postmortem examinations.

The chief guest, Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), graced the occasion. The ceremony commenced with the national anthem and a warm welcome extended to Dr. Bhargava by Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta, the Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi. The lighting of the lamp symbolized the beginning of this groundbreaking initiative.

The formal inauguration of the Centre, a first of its kind, was conducted by Dr. Bhargava and Dr. Gupta, who unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion. The event coincided with the 2nd Annual AIIMS Forensic Guild Conclave, 2021, drawing participation from faculties across different AIIMS campuses nationwide. As part of the ceremony, the CT Scan complex was inaugurated, marking another step towards enhancing forensic capabilities.

During his address, Dr. Bhargava emphasized the importance of innovation in forensic medicine and the necessity of providing a conducive working environment with state-of-the-art facilities. Drawing inspiration from the song “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, he imparted valuable life lessons, highlighting the significance of death and the importance of understanding its various facets. The concept of a peaceful death during sleep was explored, eliciting insights from delegates present at the event.

Following the formal proceedings, Dr. Bhargava was given a tour of the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy, along with the newly renovated odorless Autopsy Mortuary Suite. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology, aimed at revolutionizing the process of postmortem examinations.

The establishment of the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy represents a significant leap forward in forensic science. Virtual autopsies offer a non-invasive and efficient alternative to traditional methods, enabling thorough examination and analysis of remains. By leveraging advanced imaging techniques, such as CT scans, forensic experts can glean valuable insights into the cause of death, facilitating more accurate investigations.

Moreover, the inauguration of this Centre underscores AIIMS’ commitment to advancing research and education in forensic medicine. Through collaborative efforts and interdisciplinary approaches, the Centre aims to foster innovation, excellence, and collaboration in the field of forensic science.

The inauguration of the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Virtual Autopsy heralds a new chapter in forensic science in India. With state-of-the-art facilities and a commitment to innovation, this Centre is poised to revolutionize postmortem examinations, contributing to the pursuit of justice and the advancement of forensic medicine.
